Not in a general way, but in a specific way: through the names of military operations, prophetic references, categories of \u2018necessary\u2019 war, and symbolic images that serve to make violence acceptable, more natural, inevitable, even obligatory because it is willed by God when it is aimed at the conquest and defense of the so-called promised land. Biblical language as a tool for legitimizing power<\/h2>\n

When I talk about \u201ccaste<\/strong>,\u201d I am not engaging in conspiracy theory. I am pointing to an ancient and at the same time very current structure: a power that represents itself as necessary, that feels itself above common judgment and, above all, that builds its own consensus using sacred language. In this mechanism, the Bible is not simply a religious book: it is an archive of formulas of command.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1767098929894{margin-top: 20px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_single_image image=”2618″ alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1747930770591{margin-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

The \u201croar of the lion\u201d: Amos and biblical symbolism in contemporary warfare<\/h2>\n

The most obvious example these days is the name given to the Israeli operation against Iran: sha’agat ha’arieh, \u201cThe roar of the lion.\u201d Many have referred to Amos 3:8:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d9\u05b5\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05d0\u05b7\u05d2 \u05de\u05b4\u05d9 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d9\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0 \/ Adonai YHWH dibber, mi lo yinnave?<\/strong>\u201d,<\/p>\n

meaning: \u201cThe lion has roared, who will not fear? The Lord YHWH has spoken, who will not prophesy?\u201d<\/p>\n

But here there is a decisive fact that I wanted to emphasize: Amos does not speak against external enemies; he speaks against Israel, against its sins, which are nothing more than disobedience to Yahweh’s commands, and he announces the punishment that will befall it.<\/p>\n

The same chapter also contains Amos 3:4:<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes a lion roar in the forest when it has no prey?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

So the reference to the lion is not innocent: in the biblical text, the roar signals prey, a threat, an action already oriented toward capture. The figure of the lion recurs frequently in the Bible\u2014from Genesis to the Book of Proverbs, from the Second Book of Samuel to the prophets Isaiah and Hosea\u2014and represents strength, dominion, and the inevitability of action.<\/p>\n

When that symbol is transferred to contemporary warfare, the effect is clear: violence ceases to appear as a political decision and presents itself as an almost natural, almost prophetic gesture.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1767098866913{margin-top: 20px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_video link=”https:\/\/youtu.be\/nydGGGb8TBk” align=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1773315015804{margin-top: 50px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Dalia Gavriely-Nuri’s study on the language of military operations<\/h2>\n

Here, the work of scholar Dalia Gavriely-Nuri<\/strong>, a professor at Tel Aviv University, is illuminating. In her research on Israeli military language, she has shown that the names of operations are by no means neutral. Giving military operations names taken from nature or the Bible has three fundamental effects: naturalization, euphemization, and legitimization of war<\/b>.<\/p>\n

In other words, war becomes more speakable and more acceptable, integrated into the collective mental landscape. It is no longer just war: it becomes destiny, historical continuity, identity.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1747930857330{margin-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

The relationship between Israel and Persia in the Bible<\/h2>\n

There is another observation that I consider decisive. If one really wanted to find a historical justification in the Bible for the conflict with Persia, it would be difficult to do so. In fact, the biblical picture points in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n

In Isaiah 45:1, Cyrus is even called \u201canointed,\u201d that is, mashiach<\/i>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThus says YHWH to his anointed, to Cyrus…<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

This is because he freed the people from Babylonian rule.<\/p>\n

In Ezra, Nehemiah, and Daniel, other Persian rulers\u2014Darius I, Xerxes I, Artaxerxes\u2014perform acts favorable to the Israelites, even allowing the reconstruction of the temple and the walls of Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

And in the narrative tradition of the Book of Esther, the Persian kingdom even becomes the context in which the Jews are saved from the threat of extermination.<\/p>\n

This means one very simple thing: the current conflict has no linear basis in biblical memory. If anything, the Bible is selectively reused<\/b> to provide a symbolic coating for contemporary interests.<\/p>\n

The dual power in the Bible: political authority and religious authority<\/h2>\n

And this is where the \u201ccaste\u201d returns. In the texts of the Old Testament, I often see a dual power: on the one hand, political power, on the other, priestly power; on the one hand, operational command, on the other, its religious cover.<\/p>\n

Moses<\/strong> and Aaron<\/strong>\u2014the civil leader and the religious leader\u2014are a very clear example of this alliance.<\/p>\n

It is a structure that does not obey common rules: it imposes them. When it judges, it always judges from above. Civil laws and religious laws constitute a whole, as is still the case today in theocratic systems.<\/p>\n

The mechanism of power: problem, reaction, solution<\/h2>\n

The point, therefore, is not to ask whether or not a new elite exists. The point is to understand how it authorizes itself<\/b>.<\/p>\n

And I see that it continues to authorize itself with the same tools as always: promise, election, necessary war, absolute enemy, sacralization of conquest.<\/p>\n

The news passes, but the mechanism remains. It often applies a tried and tested technique: creation of a problematic situation, reaction of the people demanding a solution, intervention of the power that has planned the sequence of events to present the final conclusion\u2014actually decided from the outset\u2014as a necessary act and even one demanded by the people themselves.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1769683783956{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

In the last two videos, I tried to do something very simple: shift the discourse from the clamor of declarations to the weight of words. When a war takes its name from a verse, when a political choice is cloaked in the Bible, when force is presented as destiny, then the problem is not only geopolitical.<\/p>\n

It is philological, cultural, symbolic.<\/p>\n

And until we have the courage to read what the text really says, we will continue to suffer what others want it to say in order to use it to their advantage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
