But what happens when we go back to the origins, when rereading them means returning the texts to the context from which they came? In this article, I want to take you with me on a journey through <strong>ancient texts,<\/strong> <strong>gospels<\/strong>, <strong>apocryphal traditions<\/strong>, and forgotten words, to reflect on a simple truth: <strong>those texts do not belong to us<\/strong><em>. They were born within the Jewish world, they speak to the <strong>people of Israel<\/strong>, and only with Israel do they make sense.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1747930712862{margin-top: 20px !important;margin-bottom: 50px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/youtu.be\/t0kfN-5KIhk&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1725610661138{margin-top: 30px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>The Book of Jubilees: an alternative &#8220;Genesis<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll start with the <\/span><b>Book of Jubilees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an apocryphal text dating back to the 2nd century BC, accepted by the Ethiopian Church but not by the Catholic Church. There is a direct and literal translation from Ge&#8217;ez, an ancient language of Ethiopia, and it is a text that retells Genesis and the beginning of the Exodus. It is said to have been dictated to Moses by an angel during his stay on Mount Sinai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central elements already emerge here: the <\/span><b>chosen people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Israel; God is the <\/span><b>God of Israel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and everything revolves around an exclusive covenant, a pact that does not concern the whole of humanity but a specific people.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; responsive_css=&#8221;margin_top_large:50px|margin_bottom_large:20px|margin_bottom_small:30px&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1895&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1747930770591{margin-top: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Original sin? A theological construct<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book of Jubilees does not speak of original sin in the Christian sense. The origin of \u201ccontamination\u201d is attributed to the union between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angelic beings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or, as I prefer to define them, individuals from another world) and women. There is no hereditary guilt, no stain on the human soul: it is all a matter of biological contamination, and the universal flood was intended to eliminate those \u201cchildren of hybridization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This view not only departs from Christian doctrine, but <\/span><b>denies it at its root<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, removing the need for a savior, a sacrificial offering, or a mediator.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; responsive_css=&#8221;margin_top_large:50px|margin_bottom_large:20px|margin_bottom_small:30px&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1893&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1747930838361{margin-top: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Midrash and genetic patriarchy: between Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Midrash Beresh\u00ect Rabb\u00e0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recounts that Abraham asked God for the signs of old age to distinguish himself from his son; Isaac asked for suffering as preparation for judgment; Jacob asked for illness before death so that he could leave instructions to his children. All these elements serve to construct a narrative consistent with the idea that Israel was a genetically special people, with distinctive traits given by God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And God himself promises: \u201cI will come down and dwell among them.\u201d But does an omnipresent, transcendent God need to \u201ccome down\u201d? Obviously not. This is a <\/span><b>commander<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a physical ruler who lives elsewhere but returns periodically.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; responsive_css=&#8221;margin_top_large:50px|margin_bottom_large:20px|margin_bottom_small:30px&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1889&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1747930857330{margin-top: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>A God who chooses: Israel as a priestly people<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book of Jubilees insists: God has <\/span><b>many peoples<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but he has chosen <\/span><b>only Israel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To them he has entrusted his commands, he has asked them to build his sanctuary, in the midst of that separate people, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is, distinct. The other peoples have been handed over to other beings (Elohim), but Israel belongs to Yahweh, and Yahweh is the <\/span><b>exclusive prince<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The covenant of circumcision, the laws, the commandments: everything is for Israel, everything is Israel. Even the promise of paradise on Earth concerns <\/span><b>only them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because the seat of the kingdom will be here, on this planet, with a physical God who will dwell in Jerusalem.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; responsive_css=&#8221;margin_top_large:50px|margin_bottom_large:20px|margin_bottom_small:30px&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;1891&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1747930874383{margin-top: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>From the apocrypha to the Gospels: exclusive continuity<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Gospels we find the same idea: Jesus always speaks to \u201cyou,\u201d not to everyone. \u201c<\/span><b>Peace be with you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peace to all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI pray for them, I do not pray for the world.\u201d Jesus is a Jewish-Messianic rabbi who addresses his people. Everyone else is excluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even when he says, \u201cI have not come to bring peace, but a sword,\u201d he emphasizes that his message will divide families and cause conflict. It is a militant, selective, direct message.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; responsive_css=&#8221;margin_top_large:30px|margin_bottom_large:50px|margin_bottom_small:30px&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_separator color=&#8221;black&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=&#8221;yes&#8221; animation_preset=&#8221;Fade In Up&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1725610661138{margin-top: 30px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Returning the texts: to each his own<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this leads us to a necessary conclusion: <\/span><b>the texts must be returned to their context<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Old Testament is for Israel. Even the New Testament, which is a continuation of the former, is addressed to Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Israel has not recognized Jesus as the Messiah, that is an internal matter. Christians should, if they wish, believe in another God. But not in that God, because that God has only one people: <\/span><b>Israel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So, if we really want to honor the truth of the texts, we must recognize what they clearly say: \u201cPeace be with you\u201d is not universal. It is a reserved greeting.
