What’s the difference between an angel and an extraterrestrial?<\/b> At first glance it may seem like a provocation, but in the light of what the <\/span>biblical texts<\/b> and <\/span>apocryphal documents<\/b> tell us, this question deserves attention. Who are angels according to the Bible?<\/h2>\n

\u2014 Matthew 18:10 \u2013 Angels see the face of the Father<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the Gospel of Matthew (18:10), Jesus clearly states:<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cSee that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]Here the word \u201clittle ones\u201d indicates those who humble themselves, according to the Greek verb <\/span>tapein\u00f2sei<\/b>, from \u201ctapein\u00f2\u201d, or \u201cto lower oneself, to humble oneself\u201d. And already in this sentence we notice an important detail: <\/span>the angels are in heaven<\/b>, they see the face of the Father, and they are not on Earth except when they temporarily intervene.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 Matthew 22:30 \u2013 Like angels in heaven<\/strong><\/p>\n

When the Sadducees ask Jesus about the Levirate marriage, He replies:<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]Here too: <\/span>the angels are in heaven<\/b>, they don’t belong to the earthly world. Their kingdom is elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 Jesus and the twelve legions of angels<\/b><\/p>\n

At the moment of his arrest in Gethsemane, Jesus clearly says:<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?\u201d (Matthew 26:53)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]A Roman legion consisted of about 6,000 soldiers. Twelve legions means over 72,000 entities ready to intervene. We are not talking about ethereal figures, but <\/span>organized units<\/b>, almost <\/span>heavenly armies<\/b>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” responsive_css=”margin_top_large:30px|margin_bottom_large:50px|margin_bottom_small:30px”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_single_image image=”1824″ alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1725610661138{margin-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Jesus and the kingdom \u201cnot of this world\u201d<\/h2>\n

In John 8:23, Jesus says:<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cMy kingdom is not of this world\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus is saying that <\/span>his kingdom does not come from Earth<\/b>, but rather from another dimension or location: <\/span>the heavens<\/b>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1725610661138{margin-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

The function of angels: messengers or… visitors?<\/h2>\n

The Greek word <\/span>\u201canghelos\u201d<\/b> means \u201cmessenger\u201d. But as Biglino points out, \u201cmessenger\u201d is <\/span>a function<\/b>, not a species. A messenger can be a man, an animal or something else. What matters is <\/span>the nature of the individual<\/b> who brings the message.<\/span><\/p>\n

The angels described in the Bible <\/span>appear in various forms<\/b>: human, luminous, terrible or shining. Some are <\/span>peaceful<\/b>, like the one who consoles Hagar (Genesis 16), others are <\/span>terrifying<\/b>, like the one Gideon meets (Judges 6), who makes fire come out of a rock and disappears \u201cwalking\u201d (not \u201cvanishing into thin air\u201d).<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” responsive_css=”margin_top_large:30px|margin_bottom_large:50px|margin_bottom_small:30px”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_single_image image=”1822″ alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1725610661138{margin-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Did angels have a body?<\/h2>\n

According to the <\/span>Church Fathers<\/b>, angels had <\/span>a material structure<\/b>, even if it was made of a more \u201csubtle\u201d matter: fiery, ethereal. Only in <\/span>1215<\/b>, at the <\/span>IV Lateran Council<\/b>, was it established that they were <\/span>pure spirits<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in apocryphal texts, such as the<\/span> Apocalypse of Moses<\/b>, we read that the serpent (before his punishment) had hands, feet, wings and ears: he was a <\/span>corporeal<\/b> being, with language and intellect. This confirms the idea that angels <\/span>were not spiritual beings<\/b>, but rather \u201cother\u201d, <\/span>non-human<\/b> individuals.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1725610661138{margin-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

The apocalypses: journeys in the heavens and angelic hierarchies<\/h2>\n

The<\/span> Apocalypse of Baruch<\/b>, the<\/span> Apocalypse of Peter<\/b>, and even the canonical one of <\/span>John<\/b>, tell us about angels that <\/span>guide journeys in the heavens<\/b>, <\/span>heavenly armies<\/b>, <\/span>kingdoms of light<\/b>. Jesus himself, speaking of the end of the world, says that he will return \u201c<\/span>on the clouds of heaven with all his angels, shining seven times more than the sun<\/b>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

And in the famous passage about the <\/span>144,000<\/b> (Revelation 7), we read about a special group that is \u201cmarked\u201d before the destruction. They are joined by a \u201cgreat multitude\u201d that no one can count. All gathered in the \u201cHeavenly Jerusalem\u201d: <\/span>a city not of this world<\/b>, populated by angels and selected souls.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” responsive_css=”margin_top_large:30px|margin_bottom_large:50px|margin_bottom_small:30px”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_single_image image=”1826″ alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1725610661138{margin-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Angels and aliens: two names for the same thing?<\/h2>\n

The biblical descriptions of angels \u2013 luminous, frightening, alien \u2013 <\/span>often coincide<\/b> with the stories of those who today claim to have met <\/span>extraterrestrial beings<\/b>. Both:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • They are not human<\/span><\/li>\n
  • They come from another world<\/span><\/li>\n
  • They possess different powers<\/span><\/li>\n
  • They travel in a \u201cnon-terrestrial\u201d way<\/span><\/li>\n
  • They belong to a well-defined <\/span>hierarchy of<\/b> angels (Cherubim, Seraphim, Thrones, Dominions, Powers, Virtues, Archangels, Angels)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    And yet, <\/span>perception changes depending on the name<\/b>. Someone who says \u201cI saw an angel\u201d is considered a witness to a miracle. Someone who says \u201cI saw an alien\u201d is ridiculed or accused of lying. But <\/span>what difference is there, objectively<\/b>?<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” responsive_css=”margin_top_large:30px|margin_bottom_large:50px|margin_bottom_small:30px”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_single_image image=”1828″ alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row enable_content_animation=”yes” animation_preset=”Fade In Up” css=”.vc_custom_1725610661138{margin-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

    The cult of angels: from faith to idolatry<\/h2>\n

    In the <\/span>Synod of Laodicea<\/b> (363-364 AD) <\/span>the cult of angels<\/b> was <\/span>forbidden<\/b>, as it was considered idolatrous. It was established that:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cThose who worship angels are to be anathema\u201d.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

    A strong signal: angels <\/span>were not seen as spiritual beings to be venerated<\/b>, but as entities dangerously similar to \u201calternative divinities\u201d.     Conclusion: are angels extraterrestrials?<\/h2>\n

    If we accept the content of the sacred texts literally, the answer is <\/span>yes<\/b>. Jesus clearly says:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cMy kingdom is not of this world\u201d.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

    Angels are \u2018in heaven\u2019 and <\/span>do not belong to Earth<\/b>. They are described as beings with <\/span>superior technology and abilities<\/b>, organized in <\/span>armies<\/b>, <\/span>led by commanders<\/b> such as Michael, the archangel \u2018chief of the legions\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

    So why not consider them for what they are: <\/span>non-terrestrial beings<\/b>?<\/span><\/p>\n

    Perhaps it’s time to reconsider our categories.
